AFDO, in partnership with The Co-op Federation, is inviting experienced professionals, creatives, and community leaders to become mentors in the Co-operative Communities Project – a groundbreaking initiative supporting people with disability to launch their own co-operative businesses.
Over 12 months, mentors will be matched with one of three co-op groups working in areas such as art, design, baking, or gardening. Your role will be to provide guidance, encouragement, and practical advice as participants co-design and build their businesses.
Why Become a Mentor?
- Make a Meaningful Impact: Help create inclusive employment pathways and support disability-led entrepreneurship.
- Share Your Expertise: Offer insights from your field to help shape sustainable, community-driven businesses.
- Be Part of Innovation: Contribute to a first-of-its-kind model in Australia, with national potential for replication.
- Grow Personally and Professionally: Develop your mentoring skills while engaging with diverse perspectives and experiences.
What’s Involved?
- Mentor Matching: You’ll be paired with a co-op group based on your experience and their business focus.
- Flexible Engagement: Support may include regular check-ins, brainstorming sessions, and practical advice – tailored to your availability.
- Collaborative Support: You’ll work alongside AFDO and The Co-op Federation to ensure participants are well-supported.
- Contribute to a Blueprint: Your insights will help shape a public “How-To Blueprint” for future co-op development across the sector.
Who We’re Looking For
- Professionals or creatives with experience in small business, co-operatives, community development, or relevant industries (e.g. food, design, landscaping)
- People who value inclusion, collaboration, and empowerment
- Mentors who are patient, curious, and committed to supporting others
If you’re passionate about creating opportunities and supporting disability-led innovation, we’d love to hear from you.
