In response to the findings of the Disability Royal Commission and the Independent Review of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the Australian Government – the Department of Social Services – is writing a Disability Support Quality and Safeguarding Framework and the Disability Support Ecosystem Safeguarding Strategy. These are to make sure all people with disability get good support and are safe.

ARTD Consultants, an independent company that helps the Government to look at how things are working (see our website artd.com.au), is helping the Government to work out:

  • What is important to improve quality and safeguarding
  • What outcomes – or changes – are important for people with disability
  • What it would look like and how they will know if these outcomes were achieved.

Who are we looking for?

It is important that our work is informed by the knowledge and experience of people who have lived experience with disability and their families and carers.

Lived experience is everything you have been through and felt in your life. It’s your personal story, shaped by what you’ve seen, heard, and experienced. It informs how you see the world.

We are looking for people with disability to work with our team on the project. We are looking to recruit up to 3 people through AFDO. We are also looking to recruit people with disability and their families and carers from a small number of other disability organisations.[1] This will mean we have a diverse lived experience team.

You don’t need to have particular skills for this role. You just need to:

  • Be interested in quality and safeguarding
  • Be able to work with our team – by email and online meetings

What will you do?

  • Who you will be working for: ARTD Consultants, who are working for the Government and with the support of AFDO
  • Who can apply: People with disability
  • Employment type: Casual position from February 2025 – June 2026

As a lived experience team member, you will work with us across the project:

  • Checking our plan and helping us make sure it works for people with disability
  • Participating in 4 workshops with other members of the lived experience team.
  • In total, we think each workshop will require about 6-8 hours of your time across a few days. This includes preparing, participating, and debriefing.

If you don’t want to participate in workshops, you can contribute in other ways like talking to our team or writing down your thoughts.

We are hoping to recruit people with disability who will participate in all 4 workshops. But we understand that things change, and you might not be able to do that. You can choose to have a break from the role or change your mind about being involved if you need to.

What training and support will you receive?

ARTD Consultants will train you in the skills you will need for this role. We will also provide ongoing support, such as preparing for tasks and checking in afterwards.

Will I be paid?

You will be paid for the time you spend working on this project, including time you spend in training.
