About the project

Healthy Futures is running from March 2026 to March 2028.

The project will be delivered in Brimbank, with a focus on working alongside local partners, including Brimbank City Council, community organisations, sport and recreation providers, and food services.

The project aims to reduce barriers that can stop young people with disability from taking part in community life.

Why Healthy Futures is needed

Young people with disability can face extra barriers to health, wellbeing and participation.

In Brimbank, these barriers may include:

  • limited access to inclusive sport and recreation
  • difficulty accessing affordable, healthy foodsocial isolation
  • fewer opportunities to connect with community.

Healthy Futures will help address these barriers by creating accessible, welcoming and practical activities shaped by young people with disability and their families.

What Healthy Futures will offer

The project will use a seasonal model, with activities delivered in Autumn and Spring each year. This project is available at no cost to young people and children.

Inclusive sport and recreation

Young people will have opportunities to try inclusive and adaptive activities, such as:

  • wheelchair basketball
  • inclusive dance
  • accessible cycling
  • multi-sport sessions.

Activities may be delivered through new events or by working with existing local programs.

Healthy food activities

Families will be supported through practical food and nutrition activities, including:

  • affordable fresh food pop-ups
  • home garden demonstrations
  • cooking demonstrations
  • nutrition workshops.

Youth co-design

Young people with disability will help shape the project from the beginning.

Co-design workshops will be held at the start and end of each seasonal block so young people can share what works, what needs to change, and what they want to see next.

What the project hopes to achieve

Healthy Futures aims to:

  • support more than 100 young people with disability to take part in inclusive recreation
  • support more than 75 families with improved access to healthy food
  • strengthen social connection and mental wellbeing
  • build strong local partnerships
  • create a model that could be used in other local government areas.

Working with local partners

AFDO is working with Brimbank City Council, the Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre, other council venues, local organisations, sport and recreation providers, and fresh food services.

These partnerships mean activities will be local, accessible, and connected to your community.

Partners may support the project by:

  • helping design and deliver activities
  • providing accessible venues
  • promoting the project locally
  • connecting young people and families with opportunities
  • supporting long-term community impact.
